In response to a looming strike threat, the Federal Government forms a panel to review and address the demands of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

A sub-committee has been established by the Federal Ministry of Education on behalf of the Government to examine and assess the requests presented by the Academic Staff Union of Universities.

Both parties have agreed to reconvene by September 6, 2024.

On Wednesday, a closed-door meeting was held at the Ministry of Education in Abuja. As a result, these decisions were made.

In attendance at the two and a half hour-long meeting were ASUU leadership, Minister of Education Tahir Mamman, and additional ministry officials.

At the conclusion of the meeting, Mamman informed reporters that a subcommittee had been established to examine the union’s requests and guarantee that any ambiguities were clarified and resolved.

The ASUU President, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, expressed optimism that all matters would be settled prior to the September 6 gathering on his part.

Osodeke stated that the purpose of our meeting is to thoroughly examine and address all concerns. We have granted the government a time period until the upcoming gathering to present their proposed solutions. If these issues are resolved peacefully, we guarantee safeguarding Nigerian children’s interests as our top priority.

ASUU is looking to revamp the university system by tackling issues such as better infrastructure, increased academic autonomy and a funding model that promotes sustainability.

Additional requests made by the union comprise freeing up funds for universities’ revitalization, reevaluation of the FGN/ASUU agreement from 2009, and payment of earned allowances owed to professors in universities.
