The Nigerian Union of Journalists, NUJ, has condemned the insecurity in the nation’s North Central area and urged security organisations to take immediate action to improve the deplorable situation.
Following the kidnapping of Matthew Abo, the Benue State Commissioner for Information, Culture, and Tourism, Chris Atsaka, President of the NUJ in Zone D, issued a statement making the request.
Gunmen reportedly kidnapped Abo in his village of Ukum, Benue State’s local government.
The NUJ scribe denounced the Commissioner’s kidnapping and the ongoing unrest in the area.
He claimed that the ongoing unrest in the North Central geopolitical region is alarming and that the government and security personnel must take immediate action to reverse the trend.
Atsaka bemoaned the recent rash of kidnappings, banditry, and other criminal activity and urged the government and security authorities to step up efforts to protect the populace.
In addition to the ongoing herdsmen/farmers problem in the Plateau, Benue, and Nasarawa States, which he claimed is impeding economic growth in the region, he denounced bandit activity in Niger State.
The Vice President expressed sympathy for the residents and leaders of the afflicted areas and urged swift action to bring about a return to normalcy.
