FG Includes Hairstyling, Plumbing, GSM Repair, and More in Basic Education Curriculum
The Federal Government has expanded Nigeria’s basic education curriculum to include vocational skills such as hairstyling, plumbing, and GSM repair, aiming to equip students with practical skills for the future.
The Federal Government has declared the inclusion of hairstyling, plumbing, GSM repair, makeup, and 12 additional new trades/subjects into the basic education curriculum.
This development follows continuous reforms across multiple sectors of the economy.
According to a statement from the National Orientation Agency (NOA), new trades have been incorporated into the Basic Education curriculum in order to enhance students’ practical skills and employability.
The new subjects cover plumbing, tiling and flooring work, POP installation, event decoration and management, bakery and confectionery arts, hairstyling, makeup artistry, interior design, GSM repairs, and satellite/TV antenna installation.
Other services include the installation and maintenance of CCTV systems and intercoms; solar system installation and upkeep; garment production; agriculture and processing, which encompasses crop cultivation, beekeeping, horticulture, as well as livestock farming such as poultry and rabbit rearing. Additionally offered is basic digital literacy training covering IT skills and robotics.
The statement indicated that the new subjects will be implemented starting January 2025 for primary and junior secondary students nationwide.
