179 Nigerian students are pursuing various degrees in Russia thanks to grants from the Federal Government (FG).

At the pre-departure briefing for the 2023–2024 Bilateral Education Agreement Scholars to Russia in Abuja on Tuesday, the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, reportedly made this declaration.

Representing the Minister was Mrs. Rakiya Ilyasu, Director of Universities Education in the Ministry, who counselled the students to make the most of this chance and to approach their studies with caution.

He stated that a great deal of money had been invested in them and that the nation expected them to return and contribute.

Two more sets of students are slated to depart on November 15 and November 17, while the first batch is already on their way to the airport for departure.

During her speech, Mamman counselled the scholars to maintain moral principles, focus on their education, and represent their nation with distinction while they were overseas.

Building on his prior experiences in other nations, such as Ukraine, he also emphasised the significance of abiding by the laws of the host nation and keeping in close communication with the Nigerian Embassy.

Following hundreds of applications in November 2022 and ending with the nomination of the top candidates, the Federal Scholarship Board’s Director, Asta Ndajiwo, outlined the stringent selection procedure.

Ndajiwo, who had mentioned earlier terrible events in which scholars died while swimming, cautioned the scholars to stay away from dangerous extracurricular activities.

She stressed that people should use caution when near bodies of water, especially if they are not experienced swimmers.

The government and their families had provided the scholars with resources, and it was expected that they would return to Nigeria at graduation and use their newfound knowledge and abilities to make a substantial contribution to the country’s development.
