The FG firmly denies alleged plans to sell universities to private investors, ensuring educational institutions remain public.

On Tuesday, July 16, the federal government declared that there were no intentions to transfer ownership of public universities to private investors.

Prof Tahir Mamman, the Minister of Education clarified that misinformation exists regarding a specific aspect of the ministry’s policy on tertiary education.

On Tuesday in Abuja, Mamman categorically denied the report as a complete fabrication during a meeting with agency heads, parastatals and directors from the Ministry of Education.

He stated, “This administration values the establishment of public institutions and does not hesitate to seek assistance from private sectors in order for the government to operate effectively.”

Private sectors have been significantly contributing towards tertiary education for several decades. In Nigeria, the number of private universities exceeds that of their public counterparts. The government has initiated an effort to promote global competitiveness in higher education by allowing international players to establish educational institutions within our boundaries under a framework called transnational education. Such collaborations can benefit local universities as well with certain regulations in place.

He clarified that the standards in other countries have been raised by international institutions establishing campuses or creating new organizations there.

The minister stated that the government has not only saved foreign exchange for those countries but also increased revenue by opening up tertiary education to allow investment in our country’s institutions. Additionally, she clarified that the government is not relinquishing any of its control over these establishments.

The minister stated that the meeting held significance in evaluating their progress, analyzing how key policies were being implemented and addressing potential obstacles. Additionally, it was important to confirm their dedication towards overcoming any challenges encountered.
