On Tuesday, the Federal Government submitted a request to have the “illegal possession of firearms” lawsuit against suspended Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor Godwin Emefiele withdrawn.

Mohammed Abubakar, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) at the Federal Ministry of Justice, said orally to Justice Nicholas Oweibo of the Federal High Court sitting in Lagos State that the application was made as a consequence of additional investigations.

However, Emefiele’s attorney, Senior Advocate of Nigeria Joseph Daudu, contested the application and insisted that the government must first absolve itself of disobeying the court’s ruling giving Emefiele bail before considering its application.

To make a decision on the application, Justice Oweibo has scheduled a hearing for Thursday, August 17, 2023.

Speaking to reporters, the DPP announced that the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court had received 20 new counts.

Emefiele was charged with “conferring unlawful advantages” in one of the counts, he claimed.
