A student was killed in a tragic car accident on Monday while students were celebrating the end of their examinations at the University of Management and Technology (IMT), Enugu.
According to eyewitnesses, the accident occurred when the final year student drove recklessly in the excitement of the celebration, leading to the fatal accident.
A student who wished to remain anonymous said the brakes of the car appeared to have failed, causing it to smash into the crowd of students.
The car hit several people before running over the victim, resulting in her premature death.
A video clip taken at the scene of the accident and now going viral on WhatsApp, shows students attempting to lift the vehicle off the victim’s body.
IMT management confirmed the tragic incident. In a statement released on Tuesday, Acting Principal Emeka Ejim offered condolences and reiterated that students have been repeatedly warned against “enthusiastic and excessive celebrations”.
“The deceased girl is not a student of IMT but is from Peaceland. She had come to see off one of the injured students,” Ejim said.

The Acting Principal said that apart from the deceased victim, two students from the School of Public Administration were injured in the incident.
He said the injured students were undergoing treatment at Posh Hospital in New Haven area of Enugu.
Ejim said one of the injured students was an HND I student while the second victim was an HND II student, all of whom were students in the administrative department of the institution.
He said one of the injured students would be taken to Enugu Orthopaedic Hospital on Wednesday after an X-ray revealed he had a fractured leg.
Ejim announced the indefinite suspension of final examinations at the institution.
“The AB and the management are set to hold an emergency meeting tomorrow, Wednesday, October 2, 2024 at 9am for further discussions,” he said.
The institution’s spokesman, Mark Eze, said exams had been suspended to allow management to investigate the incident.
“We want to know what happened and how it happened.
“Despite all the warnings we issued, students still held the kind of celebrations that led to this incident,” Eze, a lawyer, said.
