Female prisoner population rises by 4.82%- NBS

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has reported an increase in the percentage of females admitted into the Nigerian Correctional Centre in 2022.

According to the NBS Statistical Report on Women and Men in Nigeria 2022, the percentage of female admissions stood at 4.90% in 2020, dropped to 4.48% in 2021, and then increased to 4.82% in 2022.

This data highlights a fluctuation in the number of female inmates over the years.

The report also revealed that male inmates accounted for the majority of the prison population in 2020, 2021, and 2022, with percentages of 95.10%, 95.52%, and 95.18% respectively.

This indicates a consistent trend of higher male representation within the Nigerian correctional system.

Interestingly, the report highlighted that stealing was the most prevalent offense committed by both men and women.

In 2020, the number of men convicted of stealing was 40,555, which decreased to 31,921 in 2021, but then increased to 44,477 in 2022.

Similarly, the number of women admitted for stealing in 2020 was 1,981, which decreased to 1,320 in 2021, and further declined to 1,272 in 2022.

The report also shed light on the decline in the crime of bank fraud during the period under review. In 2020, there were 22 males and four females arrested for bank fraud, while eight males and two females were convicted.

However, in 2021, there were no arrests or convictions for bank fraud. In 2022, there was an increase in the number of persons arrested, with three males and four females apprehended. The number of convictions in 2022 stood at two males and one female.

Furthermore, the report revealed that male suspects accounted for the majority (90%) of all suspects arrested for drug-related offenses between 2020 and 2022. On the other hand, female suspects arrested for drug-related offenses ranged from 7.35% to 7.62% during the same period.

This data highlights the gender disparity in drug-related crimes in Nigeria. 6. Lastly, the report provided insights into the percentage of females trafficked for forced labor.
