Igwe was apprehended with the foreign currency in the state capital’s Aba Road.
Dr. Chinyere Igwe, a federal legislator, was taken into custody by the Rivers State Police Command with $498,100 on suspicion of attempted vote buying and money laundering.
According to Channels Television, the representative for Port Harcourt Federal Constituency 2 in the House of Representatives was detained in the state capital’s Aba Road.
According to information obtained, the culprit was apprehended by men of the Command performing stop and search duties on Thursday at around 2:45 pm. A list for the money’s distribution was also discovered in his hands.
In a statement released on Friday, Grace Iringe-Koko, the police public relations officer for the Rivers State Police Command, confirmed the arrest.
She added that the suspect was detained near to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) offices and that Abutu Yaro, the Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of elections, had directed a prompt investigation and court arraignment.
According to a statement, “Police Officers from Rivers State Command deployed to INEC Headquarters Aba Road today, February 24, 2023 at about 0245hrs, while on stop and search, arrested one Hon Chinyere Igwe, member of the House of Representatives representing Port Harcourt II Federal Constituency with a cash sum of 498,100 USD inside a bag in his car.”

A list for the money’s distribution was also found. The AIG Election, AIG Abutu Yaro fdc, has mandated an immediate investigation and judicial arraignment.
“The Command urges all candidates and political parties to rigorously abide by the Election Act’s requirements and other pertinent regulations.
