Federal Charges Against Trump Dismissed
Former U.S. President Donald Trump sees a major legal victory as federal charges against him are dismissed, marking a turning point in ongoing legal battles.
A U.S. district court has approved Special Counsel Jack Smith’s request to drop the federal case against President-elect Donald Trump, effectively concluding the investigation into his actions after the 2020 presidential election.
The allegations against Trump centered on claims that he attempted to unlawfully reverse the outcome of the 2020 election, in which he was defeated by Joe Biden, and mishandled classified documents after leaving office in 2021. Trump contended that the prosecution was driven by political motives and asserted it was orchestrated by Democrats.
“The government’s motion to dismiss will be granted by the court, and the superseding indictment will be dismissed without prejudice,” wrote Columbia District Judge Chutkan in her decision, referencing the legal immunity provided to sitting U.S. presidents.

The document was released only a few hours following Smith’s filing of motions to dismiss the charges against Trump.
Steven Cheung, the spokesperson for Trump, expressed approval of the ruling. “Today’s decision by the Department of Justice concludes the unconstitutional federal cases against President Trump and represents a significant triumph for upholding the rule of law,” Cheung stated in an announcement. He further added, “Both President Trump and Americans desire an immediate cessation to politicizing our justice system; we are eager to foster national unity.”
On Monday, Trump stated on Truth Social that the charges against him are “empty and lawless, and should never have been brought.” He also previously threatened to dismiss Smith as soon as he began a second term in office, labeling the special counsel a “crooked person.”
Trump continues to be involved in a criminal case in Georgia, where he is accused of orchestrating a plan to overturn the results of the 2020 election.
In May, a New York jury convicted Trump of campaign finance violations. However, the sentencing has been indefinitely postponed. As with other cases against him, Trump maintains his innocence and denies any wrongdoing.
