Fears of 20 deaths as cultists brawl in Sagamu
In Sagamu, the administrative centre of Sagamu Local Government Area in Ogun State, cultists are alleged to have killed at least 20 young men.
The cult members of the Eiye and Aiye confraternities reportedly started their standard supremacy struggle on Saturday, according to OBASANJO NEWS24.
About 20 young males, including secondary school students, have been brutally murdered by the cults since then.
Some of the victims of the attacks were shown lying in pools of blood with one of their hands severed in graphic videos and photographs that locals posted online.
The cult killings in Sagamu have prompted a response from the public relations officer of the Nigerian police force, Muyiwa Adejobi.
On his X account, Adejobi declared that all hands must be on deck because the crisis in Sagamu extends beyond the simple deployment of an anti-cultism group.
“The Sagamu case is more complex than just an anti-cultist operation. They can be handled by the elders. Politicians are adept at making decisions. Between 2006 and 2008, I was a part of them in Sagamu. However, before I left in 2008, there was not a single cult conflict. The late Akarigbo, Oba Michael Sonariwo, and other people were my coworkers back then,” he said.
The Force PRO also suggested that the Ogun State Commissioner of Police examine himself or herself and act upon rumours that security personnel are familiar with the cultists.
On this, I shall consult the CP. There should be no compromising while dealing with cultists and criminals. In spite of all obstacles, that person must remain steadfast.
The majority of persons responsible for the wahala (trouble) in Sagamu, according to Adejobi, are not even Sagamites. From Ijebu Ode or Ago Iwoye, people occasionally travel to strike and migrate. They travel as far as Edo State in certain circumstances. Not just the security personnel, but the entire system as a whole, must deal with this issue. Multifaceted diplomacy is needed.
We will consult with the CP and take the required action after discussing this. Every young person in Sagamu is a member of a cult. Even more than students, Okada riders, craftspeople, etc., are involved in cults, and I believe that action ought to be taken against this by the town as a whole as well as Remoland as a whole.
The neighbourhood should, in my opinion, step up. To handle this issue, they should call an immediate meeting of the police, vigilante gp, and the chiefs of all the Sagamu quarters. What I’m stating here is understood and known by Sagamites. For about 2 years, I worked in Sagamu.
Inquiries about the event have not received a response from Omolola Odutola, the PPRO in Ogun.
The cult battles in the Remo town are already drawing reactions from Nigerians.
The situation in Sagamu is alarming, wrote Abdullah Ayofe Olaniyi on Facebook. It is concerning how widespread cultism is in that city and how it is supported. In order to preserve the lives of the defenceless civilians, the government and police force must act immediately.
“Only yesterday (Sunday), five (5) defenceless secondary school students were murdered at the barbershop by cultists who were aiming for the proprietor of the business. This makes me sad and breaks my heart. To put an end to this craziness, we need an aggressive programme of action.
In Sagamu, more than 20 people were slain in a single night due to cult clashes, according to Josh Fatoye. Simply said, it is regrettable. When 20 people are slain in a single night in a place like Sagamu due to cult conflict, that is how horrible the state of society has gotten.
How long will teenagers commit suicide in the service of cults? There is, in all honesty, a lot of work to be done. That 20 people will commit suicide in one night, rather than a week or a month, has demonstrated how flawed the system is through this instance. As a result of the cult conflict, 20 individuals have perished.
The truth is that our society needs a lot of work. The current state of Nigeria is quite gloomy and unfortunate. Otherwise, the standard keeps growing lower every day, and the very last thread of our society’s moral fabric is steadily eroding. The system needs to wake up and step up to the plate. If nothing is done to stop the situation and bring back normalcy to our dear society, Nigeria can soon turn into a Banana Republic. Cults should be rejected.
