The Nigerian Navy, operating through its Forward Operating Base FORMOSO in Brass, Bayelsa state, has recently transferred the Motor Fishing Trawler OLOKUN XIV along with its 12 crew members to the Federal Department of Fisheries in the state.
This action was taken following the arrest of the vessel on April 6, 2024, near the Madu oil field offshore for trawling with a malfunctioning Automatic Identification System (AIS), a clear violation of maritime regulations.
Captain Murtala Aminu Rogo, the Commanding Officer of FOB FORMOSO, emphasized that such breaches of maritime laws will not be condoned by the Nigerian Navy.
He expressed the Navy’s commitment to upholding the law and ensuring that all activities within Nigeria’s maritime domain comply with the established regulations.
Representing the Commanding Officer, Executive Office Commander M.A Gada reiterated the Navy’s stance on maintaining maritime security and enforcing the laws governing the maritime sector.

Captain Rogo stressed that the Navy will continue its vigilance in policing the waters to combat any form of criminal activities that may threaten the safety and security of the maritime domain.
Captain Rogo also issued a warning to mariners, urging them to adhere to the laws and regulations while operating within Nigerian waters.
He specifically called upon the Federal Department of Fisheries, in collaboration with the Nigerian Trawler Operators Association, to caution fishing trawlers against engaging in any illegal activities at sea.
This proactive approach aims to deter any potential misuse of fishing trawlers for unlawful purposes and maintain the integrity of Nigeria’s maritime environment.
