A seven-person group has been established by the Federal Capital Territory Administration’s Department of Development Control to prevent building collapses in Abuja, the nation’s capital.

After the committee’s inauguration on Wednesday in Abuja, the department’s head, Mr. Mukhtar Galadima, informed reporters that the action was a part of preventative steps to deal with the city’s persistent building collapses.

We should not wait for another building to fall before taking action. We established the committee to look into buildings that aren’t stable enough to support human occupancy because of this.

“It’s a good idea to go around and locate these structures, do integrity tests, if appropriate, offer corrective solutions, and if the structure is proven to be unstable, dismantle it.

Galadima stated that the committee will be on the lookout for structures that might appear to be stable but are actually unstable and would suggest an integrity test.

The group, he continued, would also offer suggestions for minimising the frequency of building collapses in the FCT.
