Scavengers’ colony along the road corridor passing through Mabushi, Jahi, and Kado Districts has to be demolished, according to Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Mr. Nyesom Wike.

When Wike toured the area on Tuesday in Abuja, it was officially identified as “Road N12” in the Mabushi District of the Federal Capital Territory.

He called the colony in Mabushi District, which is behind the Minister’s Quarters, a “threat” to the city’s security.

Scavengers, often referred to as “Baban Bola,” including mechanics and furniture manufacturers, had taken over the region.

The minister said that more would be done to purge the city of criminal elements. He was joined by a team of security professionals and senior administrators from the FCT.

Such gangland hangouts, according to Wike, would not be permitted in the FCT.

He claimed that the colony was also helped by the dense cashew tree canopy that the FCT’s native residents had planted there for investment interests.

Wike issued a warning against growing these trees in areas designated by the government for development.

He claims that the government won’t compensate him for the trees.

Wike instructed the Federal Capital Development Authority and the Development Control Department to clear the entire area and take a scope of the road for the initial works.

“You shouldn’t give them any money. Communities should cease growing trees in this region since it is a hideout for criminals.

“When they learn that the government plans to build the road, they come and grow crops in anticipation of receiving compensation from the government. We won’t offer any sort of compensation.

“Development Control needs to clean up this neighbourhood and apprehend all of these crooks.

“These are the types of crimes you see individuals committing, and before you know it, they are hiding down here, and people are going to start claiming that FCT is not safe.

Giving them notice is not the issue. There isn’t a warning. Now you have to drive them out and clean up the place,” he continued.
