The Chinese supermarket located at the China General Chamber of Commerce in Abuja was closed down by officials from the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) during a surprise visit on Monday. Following an investigation that involved questioning Nigerian employees, the commission decided to seal off the supermarket.
Prior to this incident, there was a public outcry on Sunday regarding the discriminatory policy enforced by the Chinese supermarket, which only allowed entry to Chinese citizens while excluding Nigerians from shopping there.
The manager of the complex, Shaibu Sanusi, acknowledged that Nigerians residing within the complex were permitted to shop at the supermarket, but those from outside were not. Despite the closure of the supermarket, the FCCPC suspects that some individuals may still be inside, attempting to evade confrontation with the agency.
