Fayemi’s Proposal: Let States Decide Their Minimum Wage Rates
A former governor of Ekiti State, Kayode Fayemi, is of the opinion that states should have the authority to determine the minimum wage they are capable of paying.
He suggests that the negotiation of minimum wage should be decentralized, allowing each state to consider its unique circumstances when deciding on the wage they can afford.
Fayemi emphasizes the importance of transparency in these negotiations, stating that states should work together with their labor unions to reach an agreement that is fair and sustainable for both parties.
He argues that decentralization does not necessarily mean that workers in states will earn less than those at the federal level, pointing out historical examples where state workers earned more than federal employees.
Fayemi believes that the current discussions on minimum wage are driven by dogma and that a decentralized approach would be more beneficial for all parties involved.
