A tragic motor accident in the Babura local government area of Jigawa State claimed the lives of at least 24 individuals.
Two cars moving towards each other crashed frontally, resulting in the incident.
Some of the victims reportedly lost their lives instantly, while others were transported to a medical facility. The Jigawa State Police Command’s representative, DSP Lawan Shiisu Adam, verified the occurrence.
Shiisu stated that on Tuesday, July 16th of 2024 at approximately 11:20 am, the Command received information indicating a fatal car collision involving a DAF truck bearing registration number GMB 242 KD and travelling from Kanya market.
He went on to say that at an Immigration checkpoint, a Toyota Hiace with registration number XA 381 GAS was also heading towards Kanya market from Kano. The vehicle was overloaded and speeding when the immigration officers signaled it to stop. However, the driver refused to comply and tried to bypass the checkpoint by swerving into another lane which led him directly into a head-on collision with the DAF truck mentioned earlier.
After learning that 14 passengers had passed away immediately and four others were badly hurt, Shiisu notified the Divisional Police Officer of Kanya Division. A patrol team was quickly dispatched to the location where they transported both deceased bodies and injured individuals to Kanya Babba Hospital for immediate medical care. At the hospital, a doctor confirmed that all reported dead on arrival while those who survived are being treated under tight observation by attending physicians.
An inquiry concerning the occurrence has initiated.
