The minister spoke against the backdrop of the Federal Executive Council’s (FEC) recent allocation of N6.2 billion for bridge maintenance.
The Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos State may be closed on weekends for upkeep, according to Babatunde Fashola, minister of works and housing.
Fashola spoke against the background of the Federal Executive Council’s (FEC) recent approval of N6.2 billion for the upkeep of the bridge, whose rehabilitation is said to span 11 kilometres and include interchanges, ramps, and crucial linkages.
During Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, the former governor of Lagos State mentioned that this maintenance was planned to repair the bridge’s worn-out course.
“We would work hard to lessen the impact. Several people have voiced complaints about their driving experiences, and the government is now responding.
“If there is ever a need for closure, it won’t take much time. Weekends would be the extreme. I should be out of office by the time the procedure begins, so it should be someone else’s problem,” he remarked.
In order to hasten the restoration process, Fashola said that the ministry will collaborate with the Lagos State Government.
“We would try to lessen the effect on commuters. Anything is feasible, and we would cooperate with the government of Lagos State.
The minister said that good construction resources will be used for the restoration and that the integrity of the bridge was still intact.
“The pile caps are the concrete casing that you see at the base of the bridge. Several vessels have hit it; they need to be repaired properly.
The piers have deteriorated somewhat. They must be jacketed, and fresh cement must be applied. According to him, epoxy was applied to reinforce and preserve it.
