Former Nigerian lawmaker Farouk Lawan has been released after completing his 5-year jail term, which stemmed from a bribery scandal involving fuel subsidy.

Farouk Lawan, a former member of the House of Representatives, has been released.

This occurred after he completed his five-year sentence at Kuje Prison.

In January, the Supreme Court upheld the five-year prison sentence that had been imposed on Lawan by the Court of Appeal.

In 2021, Lawan was found guilty and sentenced to prison for accepting a $500,000 bribe from Femi Otedola, the Chairman of Zenon Petroleum and Gas Ltd.

In a unanimous decision, a five-member panel confirmed the 2022 ruling by the Court of Appeal. This ruling upheld Lawan’s sentence to five years solely for count three out of the three charges he faced at the High Court in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

In the lead judgment authored by Justice John Okoro and delivered by Justice Tijjani Abubakar, the Supreme Court determined that Lawan’s appeal lacked merit and subsequently dismissed it.

However, a video released on Tuesday depicted Lawan’s release from Kuje prison.
