In the Mowe village of the Obafemi Owode LGA, Ogun state, a family of six allegedly perished after consuming food that had been crushed by a wall gecko.
TheEagle Online said that the victims, named as chartered accountant Adeleke John Samuel, his wife Pamela Adeleke, their two children, and two other relatives, were found dead in the early hours of Friday.
The unfortunate incident was discovered, according to the report, when Lawal Ojo, their gateman, noticed the strange calm in the home at broad dawn.
The report stated, “He notified the neighbours who entered the residence only to find the remains of the victims in various rooms.”
According to the source, “they were all in the sleeping position, indicating that they likely passed away in their sleep.”
Ifenatuora Ijeoma, an eyewitness, allegedly said that the poison may have been consumed throughout the family’s meal the previous evening.
She repeated that one of the neighbours had found a dead wall gecko inside a pot of soup after closely inspecting the kitchen tools.
The results of an Africa Check fact check in 2019 showed that wall geckos are not dangerous or lethal. Although wall geckos carry a lot of bacteria, experts indicated that even if one accidentally ate one, one wouldn’t necessarily die.
Additionally, the University of Michigan’s Animal Diversity Web database asserted that “geckos are non-venomous and safe to humans.”
