Enemi Alabo, a member of the Rivers State House of Assembly, has provided information regarding the recent defect of members from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Alabo blamed internal PDP strife as the main cause of the defection in an interview that aired on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday.
“There is a split inside the PDP. Court cases pertaining to our party’s secretaryship are pending. We made a valiant attempt to contact our party’s secretariat, but we were unsuccessful. The politician responded, “I can’t tell you who the secretary of my party is as I speak to you.
What am I really talking about if I can’t even communicate with my party? Since a few weeks ago, when we were in the centre of the storm, my party has not communicated at the federal level. What sort of gathering is that?
He expressed irritation at his inability to get in contact with the party secretariat and cited current legal challenges pertaining to the secretaryship of the party.
Alabo stressed the ambiguity surrounding the party’s leadership and went on to list the difficulties that PDP members in Rivers State experience, such as intimidation and the burning of assembly chambers.
“There has been news about Rivers State. We have been harassed, repressed, and the House of Assembly has been struggling with problems.
“Our members are being intimidated, and our chambers were destroyed by fire.” Thugs on hire viciously attacked Mr. Speaker’s official dwelling.
As I write this, the party I referred to as my party has not responded. When the other 27 members of the group got together, we decided that this could not go on.
Alabo responded to these issues by stating that the legislators had unanimously made the decision to leave the party, citing Section 109 of the constitution that permits a party switch when there is a perceived difference.
