Former Nigerian military President, Ibrahim Babangida, expressed his conviction that there will not be any military interference in the progress of democracy in Nigeria.
He acknowledged that military incursions in Nigerian politics had hindered true federalism in the past, but he believes that Nigerians are now more interested in establishing a truly democratic nation.
Babangida emphasized that he freed the economy during his leadership by promoting the private sector. He also advocated for restructuring and devolution of powers to the states, allowing them to have more resources to govern their own affairs in line with the principles of federalism.
Additionally, Babangida proposed measures to address the issue of mass immigration, suggesting that the Nigerian government should take action to prevent brain drain.
According to him, it is important to create a conducive environment that motivates citizens to work for their own country, just as they do for other countries.
This will encourage Nigerians to stay in their country rather than seeking better opportunities elsewhere. He believes that by creating such an environment, Nigerians can make significant contributions to their own country, just as they have done in other countries like the US and UK.
He also reassured that Nigerians would not allow Nigeria to become a one-party state, as they value democracy and would actively oppose any attempts to establish a dictatorship. He suggested that a two-party system, along with the inclusion of independent candidates, could be a more efficient and cost-effective approach for Nigeria’s political landscape.
