The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President, Joe Ajaero, emphasized that the demand for a minimum wage of N615,000 is the most realistic amount during an interview on Channels TV’s Politics Today.
Ajaero expressed that being realistic does not solely revolve around receiving a meager wage.
He further explained that the breakdown of the N615,000 demand includes various essential expenses. For instance, accommodation is estimated at N40,000, which is a challenging amount to find a room and parlour in Abuja.
Additionally, the allocation for electricity/power is N20,000, which is insufficient to cover a month’s worth of tariff. Utility and water are set at N10,000, while a cooking gas cylinder costs N14,000 and needs to be purchased twice a month.
The allocation for food, considering a family of six, is N9,000 per day, totaling N240,000 per month.
Medical expenses are allocated N50,000, assuming no major ailments or hospital admissions. Education is set at N50,000, assuming the children are on free education.
Sanitation is allocated N10,000, and transportation is set at N3,000 for 30 days. When all these items are summed up, it amounts to N615,000.
