A prominent figure within Ethiopia’s opposition party has been abducted and killed. Bate Urgessa, a member of the previously banned Oromo Liberation Front (OLF) party, was murdered in his hometown in the Oromia region.
The OLF has called for an immediate and impartial investigation into the incident, urging human rights organizations and peace-loving individuals to support this effort. According to reports, Urgessa was forcibly taken from a hotel room and his body was discovered the following day.
He had recently been released after a two-week detention and had faced previous arrests and imprisonment. The Ethiopian Human Rights Commission has called for a thorough investigation to hold those responsible accountable.
The OLF and the federal government have long been in conflict over issues of marginalization and neglect of the Oromo people, leading to years of unrest in the region.
