The country of East Africa thinks that this action will help to protect its national interests.

According to The Reporter, which cited Ethiopia’s Foreign Ministry, the nation has submitted an application to join the BRICS club of significant rising countries. The topic might be covered at the BRICS summit, which will take place in South Africa in August.

Meles Alem, a ministry spokesman, is said to have stated at a press conference on Thursday that “We have applied for membership and are hoping for a positive response.” “It is important to join blocs like BRICS,” emphasized Meles, “as a country that has been a founding member of global institutions like the AU [African Union] and the UN, and as we seek to guarantee our national interests.”

The BRICS group, which consists of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, has received applications from about a dozen nations so far. Iran, Egypt, Bangladesh, Algeria, Argentina, and Saudi Arabia are among those seeking membership. Before the summit in South Africa in August, the bloc intends to present a framework for membership expansion.
