Former football star Paul Scholes shares his doubts regarding Joshua Zirkzee’s ability to find the back of the net. Discover his insights on the young player.
Paul Scholes, the former attacking midfielder for Manchester United, has voiced doubts about Joshua Zirkzee’s performance at the club.
The criticism ensued after the player’s goal-scoring drought.
Zirkzee, a Dutch international player, transferred to Manchester United from Bologna during the summer.
He scored against Fulham in his Manchester United debut, but hasn’t managed to find the back of the net in his next nine games.
United have faced challenges this season, securing victory in only three out of their 11 matches across all competitions.

During a SuperSport Studio discussion following Sunday’s 0-0 stalemate with Aston Villa, Scholes asserted that Manchester United’s current striker options fall short of being adequate.
“In the forward areas particularly, I believe we’re lacking quality. If we look back at the most successful teams, they have a strong capability to score goals. How many have we managed? Just five goals in seven games,” remarked the former England international.
In the past, we had three or four forwards capable of scoring 20 goals each, potentially bringing us to around 80 goals in a season. I just don’t see that kind of potential in Manchester United’s current forward line.
“Listen, [Rasmus] Hojlund performs decently, but is he likely to net 20 goals? I don’t believe so. Zirkzee… what exactly is his role? Is he a No.9 or a No.10? Will he deliver you 20 goals? I’m doubtful about that too. It seems they’re banking more on hope rather than established quality despite spending significant amounts of money.”
