However, the Portuguese switched the 36-year-old to a defensive midfielder.

The reason for Mourinho’s action was disclosed by the Serie A team, AS Roma.

“Everything about Mikel appealed to me. There are many similarities among all of the positional [defensive] midfield players I have had in my career, Mourinho stated on the ObiOne Podcast.

With the exception of Claude Makelele, who was diminutive, all of them were tall and robust. They also had what I refer to as “the simplicity of football,” which is essential in that role, and they knew how to take up space.

Whether the ball is in play or not, the team requires balance. A defensive midfielder must possess humility in the understanding that the team comes before oneself.

“Mikel was an excellent positional midfield player with me at Chelsea. He thought quickly, could make one or two touches, and the game flowed.”

Mikel twice won the Premier League championship while playing 249 league games with Chelsea.

In addition, the Nigerian won four FA Cup championships, two UEFA Champions Leagues, and one Europa League.
