When Manchester United easily defeated Brentford 1-0 at Old Trafford to even the score, Marcus Rashford scored his 28th goal of the year.
On a soggy night in Manchester, there was little hint of a repetition of the Bees’ stunning 4-0 victory against Erik ten Hag’s team in August, as Rashford brilliantly snapped United’s three-game scoring drought.
The striker, filling in for the injured Wout Weghorst in the centre of the pitch, pounced on Marcel Sabitzer’s knockdown in the 27th minute and volleyed decisively beyond David Raya from close range to clinch a crucial three points and put United back on track to qualify for the Champions League.
As of right now, Rashford has tied Wayne Rooney’s 2009–10 league-high of 10 game-winning goals.
After playing in a 3-3 thriller with Brighton just four days previous in which they had the lead three times, Brentford was shockingly quiet. Thomas Frank’s team also shown extraordinary restraint, scoring just one goal on the night.
