Southampton defeated Chelsea 1-0 in their English Premier League (EPL) match on Saturday at Stamford Bridge.
The relegation-threatened Southampton hushed the Blues, who spent over £300 million in the January transfer window, with a goal from James Ward-Prowse.
After joining Southampton before the January transfer deadline, Paul Onuachu, a striker for the Super Eagles of Nigeria, played for the club for one hour.
Ward-Prowse skillfully dispatched a free-kick he won late in the first half extra time to put Southampton on the verge of an unexpected victory at the break.
The second quarter saw Graham Potter’s team come out with more bite, but they were unable to establish the rhythm and connection necessary to go past Southampton’s defence, which was under little pressure from their visitors.
Having lost their last four league games, Chelsea now finds themselves in the middle of the table, drifting in 10th place with 32 points after 23 games.
In other league news, Arsenal reclaimed first place after defeating Aston Villa 4-2.
After Nottingham Forest held Manchester City to a 1-1 draw, the Arsenal moved into first place.
