In light of the club’s dismal start to the 2023–24 Premier League season, former Chelsea defender Gary Cahill has pinpointed two things Mauricio Pochettino’s Blues need.
Chelsea has four points after four games and is currently occupying the 12th spot in the Premier League.
Under co-owner Todd Boehly, the west London club had spent £1.1bn on new player acquisitions over three transfer windows.
Pochettino’s team is currently in the second part of the Premier League standings this season despite the fresh signings.
Cahill, who won two Premier League championships with Chelsea during his time at Stamford Bridge, thinks Pochettino will need ‘time and patience’ to turn things around at the Premier League’s top clubs.
They have experienced a few sticky results, which will help them. Contrarily, the manager [Pochettino] is obviously a terrific person to lead them through this league, therefore I think he’s a great person to do so,” Cahill said to Hayters.
“Of course, the results are quite disappointing, but the average age of the squad is extremely low, and it is a brand-new squad,” said the coach.
“A lot of them don’t yet have a lot of experience playing football, especially in the Premier League, so that will take time; the league is quite challenging.
“However, there are tonnes of talent. While I was gone with them for preseason, I observed the training, and I was quite impressed. But it will undoubtedly take some time. These young players need time and patience to mature.
