Dr. Samson Ayokunle, a former President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), has appealed to President Bola Tinubu to address the issue of multiple taxations imposed by federal and state agencies on struggling Nigerians.

During an interview on the socio-political program Inside Sources with Laolu Akande, which aired on Channels Television, Ayokunle emphasized the need for the President to stimulate the country’s economy and attract investments in the agriculture and mining sectors to unlock their untapped potential.

Rather than solely relying on excessive taxation, Ayokunle urged the government to explore other avenues to boost the economy. He expressed concern that continuous taxation would lead to the demise of the people, holding the President accountable for their unfulfilled aspirations.

Ayokunle questioned the sustainability of such a tax burden, especially considering the additional financial strains imposed by rising electricity tariffs and other expenses. He emphasized the importance of considering the financial capabilities of the citizens and avoiding measures that would drive them away from the country.

Expressing his dismay at the current state of the Nigerian economy, Ayokunle highlighted the unprecedented hardships faced by the people. He struggled to classify the situation, whether it be hyper-inflation or another form of economic distress, but emphasized the immense difficulty Nigerians face in affording basic necessities.

Ayokunle acknowledged the positive steps taken by the new administration but also expressed concern over certain regressive measures that have hindered progress.

He expressed disapproval towards the swift elimination of petrol subsidy by the Tinubu administration, emphasizing the need for a thorough consideration of the consequences.

“The government’s attempt to tackle foreign exchange issues has not been successful. Drastic measures are necessary,” he stated, highlighting the increasing economic hardship faced by the youth.

Despite his criticisms, he praised the student loan program implemented by the current government.
