Eno Administration Grants Work-Free Days, Allocates Extra N2 Billion for Gratuity Settlements

Akwa Ibom Governor Umo Eno has announced that the first and third Fridays of each month will now be designated as days off work to allow workers to engage in farming activities more effectively.

This declaration was made during the 2024 May Day celebration at the Uyo Township Stadium, Uyo, under the theme “People first.”

Governor Eno emphasized the government’s commitment to prioritizing the welfare of workers since taking office, ensuring that his administration will continue to look after the well-being of employees.

He mentioned that a total of N16.1 billion has been allocated for the settlement of gratuity arrears, with an additional N2 billion being immediately released to further reduce the backlog of gratuity payments to retired workers in the State, bringing the total amount disbursed by his administration to N18.1 billion.

Expressing gratitude to the Organized Labour for their cooperation, Governor Eno stated, “During our successful campaign, I promised to strengthen our relationship, and I am proud to say that nearly a year later, we have not only kept our promise but exceeded your expectations.

I also want to thank the organized labor for their immense support during the March 18th elections, which led to my election as Governor. We will continue to prioritize workers’ welfare and ensure that it remains a top concern.”

Governor Eno highlighted the progress made in fulfilling promises, mentioning that over 16.1 billion Naira in gratuities has been disbursed to workers so far.

He also approved an additional 2 billion Naira for gratuity payments in April, emphasizing the importance of monitoring and auditing these payments to ensure they reach the intended recipients. He urged workers to provide feedback if they notice any discrepancies in the payment process.

The refund of the N7.5% contributory pension scheme has been approved and granted, along with the payment of 3 months promotions and the release of the 2023 promotions.

Additionally, approval has been given for the conduct of service examination, and an investment has been made in affordable housing units for workers in Ibiono Ibom Local Government.

Authorization has been given for work that is currently ongoing at the 3rd Ring Road to connect workers to Uyo. Land allocations have been approved, allowing individuals to commence building at their convenience. Recently, Permanent Secretaries were sworn in, and more appointments are expected as some are nearing retirement.

The 13 months’ salary initiative is in progress, and the recruitment of health workers for Primary health centers in the State has been approved. Regarding the minimum wage for workers, further details are awaited from the federal government to implement the new minimum wage accordingly.

The Bulk Purchase Agency is viewed as a short-term intervention, with a focus on a more sustainable solution by returning to farming in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture.

To emphasize this, the declaration of the first and last Friday of every month as Farm days in the State has been made, ensuring active participation and monitoring to encourage farming practices among the populace.
