England manager Gareth Southgate resigns, ending his tenure with the national team. Discover the reasons behind his decision.

With England’s 2-1 loss to Spain in the 2024 European Championship, manager Gareth Southgate has announced his resignation.

Southgate became the first manager of the England men’s team to reach two finals and the first to reach a final outside of England during his eight-year tenure and 102 games in charge.

After Sam Allardyce abruptly left in September 2016, the 53-year-old took charge of the senior team, having previously managed the U21 squad.

He led England to the 2018 World Cup semifinals and the Euro 2020 championship game, when they were defeated by Italy at Wembley on penalties. He also led the team to the 2022 World Cup quarterfinals.

Southgate had stated in an interview prior to EURO 2024 that he would resign from the FA even though his contract with the organisation was scheduled to expire at the end of this year if he did not win the title. He declared:

It has been the honour of my life to manage and play for England as a proud Englishman. I have put everything into it, and it has meant the world to me. However, a fresh chapter and a shift are needed. I’m quitting my position.
