Adedotun Clement’s treatment constituted a violation of his right to dignity, according to Judge Ambrose Lewis-Allagoa, who also granted him N5 million in damages.

Adedotun Clement, a driver, was assaulted by members of the Lagos State Neighborhood Safety Agency and the Nigeria Police Force on October 20, 2021, at the Lekki Toll-Gate during the first anniversary of the #EndSARS protests. Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has ordered the payment of N5 million in damages to Clement.

The state government and the police were ordered to pay the driver N5 million in compensation by a Federal High Court in Lagos earlier in March.

The court also denounced the Nigeria Police Force and Lagos State Government employees who tortured Clement.

On October 20, 2021, Clement was attacked while he was driving a passenger from the state’s island to the mainland when he came across the demonstration at the Lekki Toll Gate that had been suppressed by police and Lagos State officials.

The applicant’s treatment constituted a violation of his right to dignity, according to Judge Ambrose Lewis-Allagoa, who also granted him N5 million in damages.

The governor stated that he has ordered that the damages be paid in a tweet on his verified Twitter account on Saturday.
