EndBadGovernance: Court Sets N10m Bail for Hunger Protesters

EndBadGovernance protests take a legal turn as 10 hunger protesters are hit with a hefty N10m bail each, following their arrest.

defendants by the Abuja Federal High Court on Wednesday, with each required to pay N10 million.

Between July 1 and August 4 of this year, ten individuals among the #endbadgovernance# protesters were accused of plotting to overthrow President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

When delivering a ruling on their bail applications, Justice Emeka Nwite granted them bail.

The protesters are required to provide one surety each who must be an Abuja resident and offer the same amount, among other conditions.

Additionally, the guarantees must possess property in Abuja and present documentation of these properties to the court while also providing a sworn affidavit verifying their financial resources.

The court requires both the accused and their guarantors to surrender their global passports and provide three up-to-date passport images.

In spite of the opposition from the Inspector General of Police, Justice Nwite granted bail to the accused and instructed them not to partake in any public demonstration throughout their court proceedings.

Until their bail conditions are deemed satisfactory, the Judge directed that they remain in custody in prison.

Their trial is scheduled to begin on September 27.

During their week-long nationwide protests, the accused individuals allegedly committed a treasonable offense by waging war against Nigeria.

According to the Penal Code, sections 96, 410 and 413 were violated by the offenses.

According to the IGP, the accused individuals unlawfully entered into Abacha Army Barracks and made a public incitement for military intervention in overthrowing President Tinubu’s constitutional government.

In addition, he claimed that they tried to enter the center of authority and supposedly set fire to a police station while causing harm to members of law enforcement.

It was alleged that they provoked the Nigerian population into opposing the government and caused damage to numerous public structures such as a police station, high court complex, and National Communication Commission facilities.

Michael Tobiloba Adaramoye, Adeyemi Abiodun Abayomi, Suleiman Yakubu, Opaluwa Eleojo Simon, Angel Love Innocent and others including Buhari Lawal, Mosiu Sadiq Bashir Bello Nurudeen Khamis as well as Abduldalam Zubair are the accused individuals.
