Emeka Anyaoku Calls for a New Constitution for Nigeria

Former Commonwealth Secretary-General Emeka Anyaoku has called for the creation of a new constitution for Nigeria, emphasizing the need for reforms to address the nation’s challenges.

On Friday, President Bola Tinubu hosted Chief Emeka Anyaoku, a former Secretary General of the Commonwealth and other influential leaders to discuss advocating for a new Constitution in Nigeria.

According to The Patriot, the group believes that a new Constitution is crucial in tackling the ongoing issues plaguing the nation.

Anyaoku asserts that the current constitution is insufficient for leading the country towards its goals and furthermore, it bears responsibility for both social and economic difficulties.

After holding a meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the State House on Friday, the group spoke to State House Correspondents.

Among others, Senator Shehu Sani, Mike Ozekhome, Labaran Maku, Senator Ben Obi and Segun Osoba were among the group that accompanied Anyaoku to the Presidential Villa.

Their recommendation was for President Tinubu to swiftly transmit a presidential bill to the National Assembly, directing the formation of a constituent assembly tasked with drafting an inclusive Constitution that acknowledges the country’s diversity.

A new constitution, aimed at addressing many challenges in the country, ought to undergo a national referendum giving people a chance to approve it.

The group claimed that the country’s current challenges could be attributed to what they presented and asserted that a new constitution could take nine months to create.
