Elon Musk Proposes Renaming the English Channel
In a post on his X platform on Saturday, Musk suggested renaming the body of water between England and France. He shared a satellite image of the channel with “The George Washington Channel” superimposed over it.
Musk’s post was probably meant humorously, yet it appeared just days after Trump – a strong political supporter of Musk – directed the renaming of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America and requested that Alaska’s Denali revert to its former name, Mount McKinley. The US Interior Department confirmed these changes on Friday.
Trump has consistently expressed his desire to purchase Greenland, the autonomous Danish territory. This acquisition would notably enhance the Arctic coastline of the United States. “I think we’re going to have it,” he remarked to reporters on Saturday following a tense phone conversation with Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen earlier in the week.
Furthermore, Trump has frequently proposed in recent months that Canada “should be a state” of the United States.
The Romans called the English Channel ‘Mare Britannicum,’ meaning the ‘Sea of the Britons.’ Since the Middle Ages, it has commonly been known as the English Channel. In France, however, it is referred to as ‘La Manche,’ or ‘The Sleeve,’ due to its shape.
