Elections in Nigeria: Complete list of 257 judges hearing petitions

Published

on

According to a list of the National Judicial Council (NJC), a total of 257 judges will consider complaints resulting from the Nigerian general elections of 2023.

Following the Worker’s Day break, it is anticipated that the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal and State Election Petition Tribunals will open their formal proceedings in May.

Nigerians’ focus has switched to the tribunals as disgruntled candidates in the elections of February 25 and March 18 attempt to annul victory.

All winners of the various seats have received Certificates of Return from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Numerous petitions have already been submitted to contest the results of the presidential, National Assembly, gubernatorial, and state assembly elections.

However, more are anticipated as a result of the additional elections being held on April 15 in more than 20 states, in accordance with the Electoral Act of 2022’s requirements.

Petition filing is permitted within 21 days of the declaration of results under Sections 132(7) and (8). While the court has 180 days to make a decision, the respondents have 21 days to reply.

Senior judicial officers from the State High Court, FCT High Court, Federal High Court, and National Industrial Court were chosen to preside.
