Election rerun in Saki West is mandated by the Oyo tribunal
The Independent National Election Commission (INEC) has been ordered to hold a new election in two polling places in the Saki West state constituency by the National and State Assembly Election Petition Tribunal, which is located in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State.
On Thursday, the tribunal issued this ruling and ordered INEC to hold the rerun poll within 90 days.
Shittu Ibraheem had previously been proclaimed the victor of the March 18, 2023, election in the constituency, according to Obasanjonews24
On behalf of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Ibraheem ran for office.
Julius Okedoyin, a candidate for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), stated that he was dissatisfied with the election’s outcome.
Okedoyin went to the tribunal and submitted his appeal, alleging that there were irregularities in the election.
When issuing its ruling on Thursday, the tribunal, which is comprised of judges Jibril Anaja, A.M. Yakubu, and K.I. Okpe, directed that the certificate of return provided to the APC candidate by INEC “be set aside pending any appeal to the judgement.”
The petitioners’ claims of excessive voting and serious non-compliance with the requirements of the Electoral Act have been proven, the tribunal claims. We now decide the arguments made by the petitioners against the respondents.
“It has now ordered that the March 18, 2023 election be rerun in Saki West’s Ward 6 Unit 7 and Ward 11 Unit 19 within 90 days to establish the election’s overall winner.
“We believe the petition is well-founded and successful. In the event that this decision is appealed, we hereby direct that the Certificate of Returns issued by the 3rd Respondent to the 1st Respondent be revoked.
