The proscription order went into effect on May 24, 2023, according to the state government.
In the hours preceding the transition on May 29, the Kaduna State Government commanded by Governor Nasir El-Rufai declared the Atyap Community Development Association to be an illegal organization in the state and issued a proscription order.
The order of proscription stated that the Southern Kaduna Association purportedly engaged in acts that could imperil the state’s peace, tranquility, coexistence, and good governance.
Muyiwa Adekeye, El-Rufai’s spokesman, stated in a statement that the governor signed the Atyap Community Development Association (Proscription) Order, 2023 in accordance with Section 60 of the Kaduna State Penal Code Law No. 5 of 2017 and Section 5 (2) of the 1999 Nigerian Federal Constitution.
The prohibition order entered into effect on May 24, 2023.
Sections 38 and 40 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria guarantee to all citizens the right to freedom of thought, conscience, and religion, as well as the right to freedom of association and peaceful assembly.
