President Bola Tinubu has been given the duty of putting the 2009 ASUU/FG agreement into effect in order to stop the impending strike by Prof. Sola Afolayan, Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities at Ekiti State University branch.
The union chief also bemoaned the Federal Government of Nigeria’s unhelpful approach towards the country’s university system.
Prof. Afolayan observed that public universities were becoming “decrepit and dysfunctional” as a result of the government’s casual attitude towards the 2009 ASUU/FG Agreement.
“Only divine intervention can avert our universities’ impending industrial inertia,” he declared. It is regrettable that Chief Tinubu was occasionally cited as claiming that, given the chance, he would not permit an ASUU strike of any size while he was fighting for national leadership. Sadly, what has he accomplished in his time as president?

“We may be approaching another action time, but all avenues are always used to cry out on the systemic predicament of our public universities and their workers to the ears of several governments. The cry has always fallen on deaf ears.”
The ASUU chairman counselled Tinubu to have the guts to respond to the union’s flurry of demands.
