Eight Young Nigerian Girls Trafficked to Ghana Repatriated

Eight Nigerian girls, victims of human trafficking in Ghana, have been successfully repatriated. Explore the details of their rescue and efforts to combat trafficking across borders.

Chairman of the Nigerian Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, confirmed the rescue of eight girls who were trafficked to Ghana.

Abike Dabiri-Erewa, who received the young women at the NiDCOM branch in Lagos, said the rescued girls have been handed over to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) to ensure their safety until they are rescued. They will undergo formal rehabilitation and be provided with safe and comfortable accommodation to reintegrate back into their families.

The rescued girls are aged between 15 and 22 years old and hail from various states in Nigeria including Ebonyi, Akwa Ibom, Imo, Plateau and Cross River.

They were allegedly lured to Ghana with false promises of jobs where they were forced into sexual exploitation.

She noted that many more trafficking victims were still awaiting rescue and expressed gratitude to Ghana’s security agencies for their cooperation.

Meanwhile, one of the traffickers, Favor Ugwu, a 28-year-old Nigerian, was arrested by a Ghanaian court on human trafficking charges and sentenced to eight years in prison.
