Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi has officially begun his third term in office after winning the December election.

The inauguration ceremony took place at Egypt’s new parliament headquarters in the New Administrative Capital outside of Cairo. Sisi secured an overwhelming victory in last year’s election, receiving 89.6% of the vote and the support of 39.7 million citizens.

Despite facing economic challenges and regional tensions, Sisi’s government has been actively seeking investment and implementing major infrastructure projects to address these issues. The New Administrative Capital, where the inauguration occurred, has been criticized for its extravagant spending.

In December, several voters informed Reuters that their choice to support Sisi was influenced by the Gaza conflict, as he has consistently presented himself as a stabilizing influence in the tumultuous region. Recently, on Monday, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean (PAM) honored the Egyptian leader by awarding him the prestigious ‘Champion of Peace’ accolade for 2024. PAM justified their decision by highlighting Sisi’s commendable endeavors in securing a ceasefire in Gaza and facilitating the crucial provision of aid to the Palestinian people.
