The president of Egypt’s football federation announced on Wednesday that Egypt has sought permission to host some group-stage matches for the 2034 World Cup, which will take place in Saudi Arabia.

“Saudi Arabia is set to host and organize a historic edition of the World Cup, and we extend our best wishes for success to our Saudi brothers,” stated Hany Abo Rida at the 14th CAF Extraordinary General Assembly in Cairo.

“Simultaneously, we aspire for FIFA President Gianni Infantino to bestow upon us, as Africans and Egyptians, the privilege of hosting and organizing one of the World Cup groups in 2034.”

The tournament will celebrate 100 years since Egypt became the first African nation to participate in a World Cup, following their appearance in the 1934 edition hosted by Italy.

As the sole candidate, Saudi Arabia was officially selected by the FIFA Congress on December 11 to host the 2034 World Cup.

Saudi Arabia will be the third Arab nation to host the World Cup, following Qatar in 2022 and Morocco’s co-hosting with Spain and Portugal in 2030.
