Augustine Eguavoen has set out clear conditions for accepting the permanent position as Super Eagles head coach. Read about the requirements he has put forward.

Super Eagles interim coach Augustine Eguavoyen has hinted at the possibility of assuming the head coaching role on a permanent basis if certain conditions are met.

Eguavoyen, who will lead the Nigerian national team in the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Libya, shared his thoughts in a recent interview.

Eguavoyen, who secured four points from the first two qualifying matches, stressed that the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) would need to offer him a long-term contract before he could be considered for a long-term position.

He also stressed the importance of patience and the continued support from the football association to build a strong and competitive team.

“The job at the Super Eagles is not one I can take lightly. If I take it on permanently I need to sit down and think and contemplate because it’s not an easy job.

“It’s going to be tough. You’re going to need long-term contracts, patience, contract clauses because you’re not going to win every day. It takes time to build a team,” Eguavoen told Brilla FM.

The three-time head coach lamented that he was not given enough time to truly realise his vision for the team.

“In 2006 I was in charge for six months. In other years it was just two months or a few games. Clemens Westerhof had five years there. Gernot Rohr was in charge for six years. They were given time but never two years in a row,” he said.

He reiterated that to be successful as a coach he needs long-term guarantees, contract clauses and a vote of confidence from the NFF.
