The EFCC’s official X account has disappeared, raising concerns as the agency faces cyber threats from fraudsters.

The EFCC suffered an unforeseen obstacle after their verified Twitter handle, which had garnered a 2.2 million following under its previous name of X, vanished from the site without explanation.

After the anti-corruption agency ramped up its efforts to combat online fraud, a group of suspected internet scammers threatened cyber warfare. Shortly thereafter, an event unfolded.

The disappearance of the account was explained by Dele Oyewale, who serves as the chief spokesperson for EFCC.

He stated that it occurred due to a problem within their network and assured everyone that efforts were being made to rectify this issue.

The ICT department has been dedicating time and resources towards restoring access, but currently three days have already passed since its disappearance.

Oyewale shared in a dialogue with The Gazette, stating that the ICT department has been diligently working on resolving the issue for nearly three days and expressing hope for its prompt return.

There has been speculation about potential sabotage or sanctions from X due to the unexplained absence of the account, but there is still uncertainty surrounding its root cause.

The EFCC’s intense efforts to fight online fraud have been met with disapproval from human rights advocates who allege that the agency is violating citizens’ fundamental rights. In light of this, the recently reported occurrence further compounds their concerns.
