The High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in Abuja reversed its previous directive to the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to arrest the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede.
The court had initially ordered Olukoyede’s arrest for allegedly disregarding a court ruling that instructed EFCC operatives to vacate a property in Abuja.
Justice Abubakar Hussaini Musa supported the argument put forth by the EFCC Counsel, Rotimi Oyedepo, stating that Olukoyede is a law-abiding officer who upholds the rule of law and is dedicated to enhancing professionalism and accountability within the EFCC.
Oyedepo assured the court that Olukoyede would not intentionally disobey a court order and requested the dismissal of the contempt proceedings against his client.
The defense counsel, Adeyemi Pitan, did not oppose Oyedepo’s submissions. Justice Musa acknowledged that Olukoyede was unaware of the situation and subsequently lifted the order and cleared him of contempt charges.
The court adjourned the case until February 7, 2024, for the hearing of the main lawsuit.
