The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has apprehended several individuals, including Chinese nationals, at Enugu Airport in a recent crackdown on financial crimes. Investigations are ongoing.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has reported the arrest of two Chinese siblings, as well as two Nigerian individuals, in Enugu. They are accused of trying to export solid minerals without the necessary permits.
The EFCC, through a statement from the Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, named the suspects as Wang Jiang, Wang Richard, Donatus Agupusi, and Michael Benneth Agu.
Wang Jiang was allegedly detained at Enugu’s Akanu Ibiam International Airport when airport security found stones believed to be solid minerals in his luggage during a baggage screening.
According to the statement, the other three suspects, including Nigerians Donatus Agupusi and Michael Benneth Agu, were detained at the EFCC’s Enugu Zonal Directorate.
The EFCC reported that the arrest occurred following intelligence received from the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) on November 3, 2024. Jiang was intercepted with three packages containing stones suspected to be solid minerals.
“Initial investigations into the case revealed that Agupusi, who owns Great Wall Construction Limited, employs the other suspects. The investigation also uncovered that Jiang was trying to leave the country with solid minerals to conduct tests on them in China,” according to the statement.
Additional inquiries revealed that none of the suspects had acquired permits to export the minerals to China.
“The statement added that the suspects will be taken to court once the investigations are complete.”
