EFCC Are Terrorists Using Their Power Against Nigerians, Says Olisa Agbakoba
Olisa Agbakoba has criticized the EFCC, accusing the anti-corruption agency of acting like terrorists by wielding excessive power against Nigerians, sparking a heated debate on their methods and authority.
On Friday, Olisa Agbakoba, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), referred to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) as akin to a terrorist organization.
Agbakoba claimed that EFCC operatives are misusing their constitutional powers to intimidate Nigerians, which should not happen.
Appearing on Arise TV’s Morning Show, the senior lawyer stated that the legislation establishing the EFCC was expedited through the National Assembly more quickly than any other bill.
He stated, “To address the issue of EFCC’s legitimacy, it’s essential for the House of Assembly to clarify its roles. Why do we have the EFCC, Special Fraud Unit, and ICPC all performing similar functions without any effective results?”
“The EFCC has accomplished some positive actions, but it has also made significant missteps. Take Tarfa for instance: regardless of his unscrupulous behavior, was it appropriate to treat him that way? In a civilized society, would you drag a former Inspector General of Police like that? It’s simply not right. Even when you consider the constitution and try to give them credit where due, I cannot approve because their conduct is akin to terrorism.”
In my opinion, they intimidate us. Clad in their red coats, they wield their power to instill fear whenever the name EFCC is mentioned. A law enforcement agency should not operate this way; they should strive for better practices.
“The system’s shortcomings shouldn’t allow anyone to escape responsibility, as that would undermine its entire purpose.”
