The Edo State chapter of the PDP has revealed that it paid N64 million to secure the release of its party members detained by the police, raising questions about law enforcement practices.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) branch in Edo State has claimed that it paid N64 million to the Nigeria Police for the release of its members who were detained prior to the September 21, 2024 governorship election.
It was reported that Dr. Anthony Aziegbemi, the state chairman of the party, made this allegation during a press conference in Benin City on Monday.
He mentioned, “You may remember that the police were arresting our members based on false accusations of killing Inspector Akor.”
The police have brazenly released our members after reportedly collecting approximately N64 million, supposedly for bail.
Astonishingly, additional arrests have occurred following the election. It raises questions about how much further the police can decline under this evidently biased IGP leading what appears to be the APC’s enforcement arm.
Aziegbemi also claimed that the party’s intelligence unit had discovered plans by the APC to set fire to the INEC office.
He stated that the aim of the press conference was to inform security agencies about the supposed APC plan.
Attempts to contact the Edo State Police Command for a response to the allegation were unsuccessful, as Moses Yamu, the command’s Public Relations Officer, did not answer phone calls.
Nonetheless, he replied to a text sent to his phone number with, “Can’t talk now, please text me.”
